Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would be moving to a foreign country to live, let alone a country in the Middle East. Over the 2009 Christmas and New Year’s holidays, my husband Roger and I discussed what we wanted the next part of our life to be like. He thought that before retiring, he would like to do one more airport project but only if he could find something very interesting. I half-jokingly agreed that would be fine but could he try for an exotic location? As usual, Roger came through and soon we were headed to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. This blog is a recap of our "leap-of- faith" wanderings around the Middle East and beyond. We joyfully share these expat experiences.

STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES AND BE GRATEFUL … as seen through the lens of Louise Schwartzberg’s amazing time lapse photography.

It is the day after the American Thanksgiving.

For many people in the USA and around the world it means the start of a frantic period that traditionally gathers friends and family together to share special meals and exchange gifts.

Sometimes the activities become so hectic that we risk losing sight of the true meaning of “the season.”

So I have a gift for you!

Before you get too caught up in the season, I want to share this video that our good friend Bryan Kane sent. It was screened at the September 2011 San Francisco TEDx.

It is a work in progress from Louie Schwartzberg, renowned time lapse photographer, and is accompanied by the “powerful words” of Benedictine monk David Steindl-Rast.”

It is about savoring time and keeping your sense of wonder. It is about nature, beauty and gratitude. It is about an explanation of what OMG really means.

It is very important to watch this through to the end. I promise you it is worth the time and will inspire you to savor every moment of the day.

Louis Schwartzberg is an award winning cinematographer, director and producer who captures breathtaking images that celebrate life – revealing connections, universal rhythm, patterns and beauty.”

TEDx is a small non-profit that is about Ideas Worth Spreading. Started in 1984 as a conference to share ideas, it now has gone world-wide. The TEDxSF is a regional effort in the San Francisco area “highlighting exceptional people and creative works, connecting people across disciplines, creating conversations and driving actions.”

Enjoy and let me know how it inspires you to savor life.

Thanksgiving Dinner Dubai style  . . .  many thanks to Jennifer Kasirsky and her husband Orlando Vidal  who so graciously invited us to Thanksgiving dinner at their beautiful villa in the Al Safa district of Dubai.
Acting as her sous chef, we cooked a traditional turkey dinner for her guests and Roger expertly carved the turkey.

It was a real United Nations gathering as guests were from Lebanon, France, Afghanistan, Canada, Italy, Brazil, Philippines and Puerto Rica. For most it was their first traditional American Thanksgiving. I would say they really enjoyed it as there wasn’t a morsel left.

  1. I like the presentation by Louie Schwartzberg. It's inspiring. And very cool!

Suggestion: How about doing a post on TED, or TEDx. I've heard about it, but would like to know more, esp. after seeing this. Have a happy holiday!

  3. Love the video, Katie. It gives us pause, serving as a gentle reminder that life truly is a gift. It's a reminderwe should cherish the "little things;" the little things that we take for granted as life is passing by so quickly. Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed the Smile Box too. That little poodle looks EXACTLY like my Chang! :)
